Olive Oil and Coconut Oil Soap Recipe: A Simple Cold Process Guide
Making your own soap can be a rewarding and fun experience. One of the most popular methods is the cold process, which allows you to create beautiful bars of soap using natural ingredients. In this article, we will provide you with a straightforward recipe for making soap using olive oil and coconut oil. This combination not only produces a wonderful lather but also offers moisturizing properties that are gentle on the skin.
Olive oil is renowned for its moisturizing properties. It creates a gentle and mild soap that is perfect for sensitive skin. High percentages of olive oil in soap can result in a softer bar initially, but it cures out to a hard, long-lasting soap over time. This makes it ideal for everyday use, especially for those with skin conditions or for baby soap.
Coconut oil is another essential ingredient in soap making. It contributes to a fluffy lather and helps produce a hard bar of soap. While it has excellent cleansing properties, it can be drying if used in excess. Therefore, balancing it with olive oil creates a well-rounded soap that cleanses without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
To make approximately 2 lbs. of soap, gather the following ingredients:
Ensure that your workspace is clean and well-ventilated. Gather all your ingredients and equipment before starting. Put on your safety gear, including gloves and goggles.
Using a digital scale, measure out the water and lye separately. Always add the lye to the water (never the other way around) to prevent a dangerous reaction. Stir carefully until dissolved, then set aside to cool.
In a stainless steel pot, combine the coconut oil and olive oil. Heat gently until the coconut oil has melted. Remove from heat and allow to cool until both the lye solution and oils are around the same temperature (85°F - 110°F).
Once the temperatures match, slowly pour the lye solution into the pot of oils. Use a stick blender to mix until you reach "trace," which is when the mixture thickens to the consistency of thin pudding.
If you're using essential oils, add them now and stir gently to incorporate.
Carefully pour the soap mixture into your prepared mold. Tap the mold gently to remove any air bubbles.
Cover the mold with a towel to insulate it and let it sit undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours. After this time, unmold the soap and cut it into bars.
Place the soap bars on a drying rack or a paper towel in a cool, dry area. Allow them to cure for at least 4 weeks. This process helps the soap to harden and ensures that all lye is neutralized.
Creating your own olive oil and coconut oil soap using the cold process method is an enjoyable and fulfilling project. Not only do you get to customize your soap with natural ingredients, but you also have the satisfaction of using a product that’s gentle on your skin. This recipe is perfect for beginners and can be modified with various essential oils for added fragrance. Enjoy your soap-making journey and the delightful bars you’ll create!

Coconut oil contributes to a fluffy lather and helps produce a hard bar of soap. While it has excellent cleansing properties, balancing it with olive oil prevents the soap from becoming too drying on the skin.
