Creating your own soap at home can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, especially when using natural ingredients like olive oil and coconut oil. This article will guide you through a simple cold process soap recipe that combines these two oils, providing you with a moisturizing and cleansing bar of soap.
Cold process soap making is a method that involves mixing oils with a lye solution to create soap through a chemical reaction called saponification. Unlike hot process soap, which uses heat to speed up the process, cold process soap is made at room temperature, allowing for more control over the final product's texture and appearance.
Olive oil is known for its moisturizing properties, making it ideal for sensitive skin. It creates a gentle soap that is suitable for all skin types, including those with conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Moreover, olive oil contributes to a hard bar of soap that lasts longer.
Coconut oil, on the other hand, is celebrated for its cleansing abilities. It produces a rich, fluffy lather, making your soap feel luxurious. However, it's important to balance coconut oil with other oils, as using too much can lead to a drying effect on the skin.
To make approximately 2 lbs. of soap, you will need:
Ensure your workspace is clean and well-ventilated. Wear your safety gear—gloves and goggles are essential when handling lye.
Using a digital scale, measure out the water and pour it into a heat-proof container. In a separate container, measure the lye.
Slowly add the lye to the water (never the other way around) while stirring gently. This mixture will heat up rapidly; set it aside to cool.
In a stainless steel pot, melt the coconut oil over low heat. Once melted, remove it from the heat and add the olive oil.
Wait until both the lye solution and the oils are around 85-110°F (29-43°C). Once they reach the desired temperature, slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while stirring continuously.
Using a stick blender, mix the soap batter until it reaches a medium trace. This means it should have a consistency similar to thick pancake batter.
Carefully pour the soap mixture into your mold. You can add any optional ingredients at this stage, such as essential oils or dried herbs for fragrance and texture.
Cover the mold with a towel or blanket to insulate it. Let it sit undisturbed for 48 to 72 hours.
Once the soap has set, carefully remove it from the mold and cut it into bars. The bars may feel slightly sticky, which is normal.
Place the soap bars on a drying rack or paper towel in a cool, dry place for at least 30 days. This curing process allows excess water to evaporate, resulting in a harder bar of soap.
Making soap with olive oil and coconut oil using the cold process method is not only straightforward but also allows you to customize your bars to suit your preferences. With just a few ingredients and some safety precautions, you can create beautiful, moisturizing soap that is gentle on the skin. Enjoy the process and the satisfaction of using your very own handmade soap!
